  • At the end of last April ISTAT released for the first time ever probabilistic stochastic population forecasts, from to 2015 up to 2065. The forecasts are based on the expert-based approach proposed by Francesco Billari, Rebecca Graziani and Eugenio Melilli in the paper Stochastic Population Forecasting Based on Conditional Experts Opinions (Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, 2012, doi: 10.1111/j.1467-985X.2011.01015.x). The method derives forecast distributions of the main demographic indicators on the basis of the opinion elicited from expert demographers. The online questionnaire used for the elicitation exercise was funded in 2015 by Dondena Research Center.
