Alp-Pop promotes the meeting of scholars who are interested in population issues across several disciplines, including (but not limited to) demography, economics and sociology. The conference does not specialize on a given topic or geographical area but it emphasizes empirical rigor and innovation, as well as the ability to meet the challenges of interdisciplinary audiences.

Alp-Pop emphasizes the importance of both formal and informal social interaction among scholars, favoring such interaction by combining a traditional conference program (with paper and poster presentations) with joint activities in a world-class winter resort. The conference location, the Planibel Hotel, is directly located on the well-known ski slopes of La Thuile.

Participants are expected to seek their own funding sources. A number of special-rate rooms have been blocked at the conference hotel with arrival on January 15th (the conference will kick-off in the evening of January 15th) and departure on January 19th, 2012 (the conference will end in the evening of January 18th). Conference participants will have the opportunity to book at the special conference rates and will receive information on travel to La Thuile.
